Bamboo is a rapidly renewable recourse. To put that into perspective, an oak tree takes over 30 years to reach maturity; bamboo takes less than 6!
As such, bamboo has been recognized by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) to qualify for L.E.E.D Credits. According to the USGBC homepage:
"LEED, or Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, is an internationally-recognized green building certification system. Developed by the USGBC in March 2000, LEED provides building owners and operators with a framework for identifying and implementing practical and measurable green building design, construction, operations and maintenance solutions."
LEED certification is highly sought after by businesses as a competitive differentiator and for it's cost effectiveness. As Danielle Tallman, Associate Development Manager, Best Buy put it:
"With LEED certification, Best Buy gains the advantage of third party verification. We like that stamp of approval. It sets us apart from other retailers and allows us to promote the very tangible difference that we're making. Now we want to certify as much as possible, we want to build everything to LEED Volume standards. There is something to be said for consistency. What's not to like. I mean, at this point Volume certification is just part of how we're doing business."
